ORIGINAL SOUNDS

Original Sounds Project works with original songwriters enrolled at QUT in 2019.  Recording in the state of the art studios, this project shines the spotlight on creative musicians no matter what course they are studying.  We ask these artists to come into the studio with stripped back sounds of acoustic guitar, piano, or self backed tracks so we can video them showing off their music.  The artists will perform two songs for Original Sounds which we will film, edit and publish for their own use and promotion.  We encourage the use of our online platforms for artists to promote gigs, album launches, and single releases as well as networking with fellow musos at QUT.

The beauty of this project is that you don't need to be enrolled in a QUT music degree to play for Original Sounds.  We have a huge variety of students studying in all academic areas from all faculties at Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point campuses who are talented musicians writing music in their spare time.

The original sounds team worked with two musicians in this 2019 series.  Originally there were to be three artists, unfortunately, the third musician was unable to record due to illness during the recording session.  Information about the artists and links to their performances is below in the 'Meet the artists' section.

One challenging task I encountered during the Original Sounds series was the publication of the social media posts.  Contributing interesting content, sharing posts, sharing the pages and providing feedback.  Generating engagement through Facebook and Instagram was difficult to do on my own.    I was 100% in charge of gathering all the photos, videos and information about the artists and the recording sessions.  To try and combat this, I reached out to the artist managers and asked them to provide me with the artist's bios and any single launches, gigs, promotion, and details that I could use to keep the content informative and interesting.  This resulted in receiving only the names of the artists and nothing more.  I was hoping for links to their social media pages at least but yielded nothing substantial.  I managed to still create posts and promotion with my creative writing ability regardless of the lack of information given to me.  I enjoyed this group project regardless of the challenges and I will place more emphasis on team support and communication during my next collaborative project.

Meet the Original Sounds team

Team Manager: Quentin Clark.  Australian Songwriter of the Year 2015 (Australian Songwriters Association).  Songwriting is the one constant in my life.  I have spent over 25 years performing my original songs and recording.  I am aware how hard you need to work to be successful as an original songwriter and I am passionate about supporting these creative individuals where I can.

Artist Manager: Caitie Ashby.  Studying a Bachelor of Creative Industries with a major in music and minors in entertainment and psychology allows my passions for music, creativity, and understanding how audiences and individuals work to come together. My interests lie in bringing musicians together and providing a platform for their talent and original work to be promoted and understood.

Artist Manager: Dougie Walsh. I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Entertainment industries minoring in marketing and one day hope to be a successful manager of a musical act. I hope to expose and launch the careers of many young local musicians and help to promote them in every way possible. I want this platform to promote and nurture the young talent QUT has to offer!

Cameraman and Editor: Davis Scheerle.  Constantly stumbling onto fantastic creative works that nobody is talking about has shown how important it is to expose these works to as many people as possible so they can get the recognition they deserve. This is why I’m passionate about using my Bachelor of Entertainment Industries to shine the spotlight on original talent.

Design guru: Rob Logan.

Meet the Musicians

Singer-songwriter Ray Gordon (AKA Joaquin Lees) blends chill house / R&B with pop sensibilities to transport the listener to a dream-like state. Their first release 'Nights' features a cool blend of guitar, electronic production and a whole lot of great hooks.

Cohen Skinner is new to the Brisbane music scene. Although this young man is only just getting started he really impressed the Original sounds team with his two songs.  Check out the full songs on our socials links below.
